These days traveling seems to be mainly about getting from A to B by the quickest means possible. How ever, traveling can also be a goal in itself. Would it not be wonderful to travel from one place to another while quietly contemplating the countryside flying past, discovering the uniqueness of the different regions, and just enjoying the trip. Traveling can be much more: it can be relaxing!

The Challenge of Retrofitting Air Conditioning

Refreshing air conditioning now also available in older railway vehicles.
Until the mid-90s, railway vehicles used in public transport systems in central Europe were not usually equipped with air conditioning. These had mostly been ordered as part of older frame contracts where air conditioning had not been planned for. It was deemed to be far more important to have trains with proven and robust technology for daily use.

Onboard Converters for Diesel Vehicles

Railway vehicles driven by diesel engines have electric loads that need to be supplied with power. This is mostly achieved using a generator connected to the diesel engine. The primary purpose of the diesel engine, however, is to provide traction power. It is therefore operated at variable speeds depending on the necessary drive power. However, this would immediately cause fluctuations in the electric power supply.

Latest News from Kaohsiung

In our previous issues of Rail Focus we regularly reported on the auxiliary converters that SMA has developed and produced on behalf of Siemens AG for vehicles for the Kaohsiung Metro. In the mean time, the type tests have been completed and the converter has now been integrated into the vehicle.
